Two Weeks of Life

Veronica is two weeks old today! Crazy to think it's been that long, as they've only been out of the hospital for a couple of days now, but it's true and she's growing and splendid in every way. Here she is with Myra, grinning and beaming.

Although we're all admittedly biased, I must say she's both more mobile and more peaceful than other infants I've encountered. She regularly holds her head up on her own (started doing that at about day 10), and then seldom cries or fusses. I've told Amanda this can only mean that she will be an absolute nightmare as a teenager, but she has a few years to prep for that.

Their house has been a hotbed of activity and visitors, which is great because it helps keep Team Gore entertained and ensures that Veronica is comfortable with her new position as Most Popular Girl. Kathleen has been making the hugest and most amazing group feasts every night, and we like to all crowd around and eat in the living room, with the baby in the middle like a centerpiece.

Of course, this means that Amanda and her breasts are also a regular center of attention, but they're really quite tremendous these days so all is well. She is such a natural, at ease mother that it's really fun to watch... and having her own mom there has made this transition pretty smooth so far. Veronica has slept for about 6 hours at a time, so Amanda is getting to sleep through the night barring a couple of feeding breaks, and then her mom stays in the room with Veronica the rest of the time.

Basically, Veronica is surrounded by love and turns her head when she hears her mama (or auntie or grandma); she knows she's got it pretty good, I think. Keeping everything rather Gore-tastic is our new fun game of using Veronica as the world's funniest prop in photos. She will for sure hate us all when she's older, but the laughter now is so worth it.

For those of you that haven't been over yet to see the set-up, all of the amazing gifts that Amanda received during her showers are on display - this kid has got a pretty sweet arrangement, if I do say so myself. Obviously, she is the highlight, though.

So this final picture is the one (or one of many future pictures, I should say) that Veronica will totally roll her eyes over once she is, in fact, of an age where she is rolling her eyes as a prime form of expression.

"Two weeks of life", incidentally, is the name of the doctor's check-up on this day. I think it's a great term, though, don't you?

You don't know me but I'm Drea's friend Melissa in New Jersey and have been biting my nails along with many other of Drea's friends through the whole birth/staph infection process. SOOOO glad you are doing better and Veronica is just gorgeous and clearly thriving. She sounds like a little angel. My son is five months old and had colic so we are happy to be still sane. Long way of saying, CONGRATULATIONS!!
